Meet the Author: Susan Beckham Zurenda: One of my most favorite reader things to do is to meet authors, in person especially…but via Zoom has worked great during the pandemic. I love to hear their thoughts about what led them to write their books, how they hope readers receive the messages in their books, what they are reading, and what they enjoy about the writing process.
I was very fortunate to recently be a guest at a private event with South Carolina author, Susan Beckham Zurenda to discuss her debut novel “Bells for Eli”. I had recently finished the book and found it to be a wonderful southern fiction debut. The book, set in the 1960s, in a fictional small town in South Carolina, features a coming of age story of two first cousins. It was very touching and carried a lot of depth about a surprising number of topics. Because I have always been very close with my first cousins, I could certainly appreciate the dynamic of cousins who grew up more like siblings. Susan was a delight to meet, so down to earth, and very humble about her budding writing career. I enjoyed hearing about her close relationship with one of her first cousins which inspired the story for the novel.
If you enjoy southern fiction, I highly recommend Susan’s debut novel. I am very much looking forward to reading more by Susan and hope to be able to see her again at a book event soon. Purchase your copy of Bells for Eli.
