Review edited on Feb 10, 2022 – I was very fortunate to receive an advance copy of Joy Callaway’s upcoming new novel “The Grand Design” (FYI, the original name for the novel was “The Greenbrier Resort”) but Joy decided to change the name prior to it’s upcoming May 2022 release to “The Grand Design”). I started it a mere two days ago, and could not put it down. This was my first read of Joy’s, but will certainly not be my last.
This wonderful work of historical fiction checked so many five star boxes for me. While historical fiction has become my favorite genre as of late, I particularly enjoy novels portraying strong women in history. This one certainly does, as it tells the story of the famed decorator Dorothy Draper. It also included one of my most favorite resorts, The Greenbrier, where I’ve been fortunate to stay on several occasions.
I have always loved the fabulous and unique decor at The Greenbrier, but I did not know all of the fascinating history behind both the hotel and its decor. I enjoyed Joy’s detailed writing, making The Greenbrier a character all its own in the story. I loved the dual-timeline story of Dorothy, her family history with the resort, and the details of her intense work there for so many years. It also featured the various friendships and unique relationships Dorothy had throughout her life, with some twists I never saw coming. The author’s note was also wonderful, but do not read it first.
This book will be released on May 17, 2022 and I predict it will be an instant best seller. I highly recommend it for any reader, but especially those who enjoy reading about women in history, design, decor, or have ties to The Greenbrier. It has made me want to book my next visit there very soon! Thank you Joy!
