I very much enjoyed this debut novel by Gervais Hagerty set in Charleston. While I do love virtually any book set in Charleston, this one carried an authenticity about it that are not found in all Charleston fiction. The author is a Charlestonian herself and it did shine through in the story and her use of familiar Charleston places, unwritten rules, hierarchies, social activities, and family relationships.
I very much loved the relationship the protagonist had with her grandmother as I truly adored my southern grandmother. All of the characters felt very real and the family saga had some truth telling to it as well. I loved Gervais’ writing style and look forward to reading her future novels, which I am hopeful will also be set in Charleston.
