Mini Review: The Exiles

Book Review: The Exiles, Christina Baker Kline

This was my first book by Christina Baker Kline. While it is her latest novel, it is certainly not her first. This was a five star historical fiction read for me. I loved her descriptive writing and the fact that it was about historical events I knew absolutely nothing about. I was blown away that these events actually happened and I have never heard about them. It takes place in the 19th century and follows three female convicts who are transported from their British lives to Australia, along with hundreds of other convicts, to live out their punishment. I was not aware the British had transported prisoners to a new colony in Tasmania, so that in itself was eye opening. The trials these women endured for their “convictions” demonstrated true resilience in every way. The details in her writing definitely showcase the vast amounts of research she had to do to write this story.

I am so looking forward to reading more of her work and recently purchased a signed copy of A Piece of the World at a local bookstore in Charleston, Blue Bicycle Books. It was my first time visiting the store and I must say I will definitely be back. They have a very nicely curated selection of new and used books. They also have many signed books and a large selection of local authors. I love the way they displayed a photo of the authors from their visits to the store next to the signed copies all throughout the store. Visit bookshop.org to order your copy of The Exiles and give back to your local bookstore.
